DCA vs IAD vs BWI: Picking the Right DC-Area Airport

Compare DCA, IAD, and BWI for DC travelers: drive times, cost, parking, and which airport works best for your DC limo pickup.

The Washington DC metro is served by three major airports: Reagan National (DCA), Dulles International (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI). They are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on where you’re staying in DC, whether you have status with a particular airline, and how much time you have to spare.

This guide is what we tell our regular corporate and tour clients when they ask “Which airport should I fly into?”

Quick comparison

AirportDistance to downtown DCTypical drive timeBest for
DCA (Reagan National)4.5 miles15-25 minShort-haul domestic, downtown stays, business trips
IAD (Dulles)26 miles35-60 minInternational flights, United hub flyers, Tysons stays
BWI (Baltimore-Washington)32 miles45-75 minSouthwest flyers, low-cost domestic, Maryland stays

Drive times are under typical traffic. Add 15-30 minutes during DC rush hour (7-9:30 AM, 4-7 PM weekdays).

Reagan National (DCA): closest, most convenient

DCA sits on the Potomac, directly across from the Lincoln Memorial. From the airport curb to the Willard or Hay-Adams hotel is a 15-minute drive. No other major U.S. capital airport is this close to its downtown.

Choose DCA if:

  • Your hotel is in downtown DC, Georgetown, Arlington, or Alexandria.
  • You’re flying domestic with American, Delta, or United on a short-haul route.
  • You value the shortest possible transfer time and don’t mind perimeter rule restrictions on long-haul domestic.
  • You want the skyline arrival. DCA approaches glide right past the monuments.

Skip DCA if:

  • You’re flying internationally (very limited international service; mostly Caribbean and Canada).
  • You need a non-perimeter long-haul (DCA has limited transcon slots).
  • You’re staying out in Tysons, Reston, or Loudoun County. The cross-traffic from DCA isn’t worth it.

Dulles International (IAD): the international gateway

Dulles is United’s east-coast hub and DC’s primary international airport. It sits in Loudoun County, 45 minutes west of downtown in light traffic, longer when the Beltway is bad.

Choose IAD if:

  • You’re flying internationally. IAD has nearly all of DC’s transatlantic, transpacific, and Latin America service.
  • You’re a United MileagePlus member or fly United’s premium cabins.
  • You’re staying in Tysons Corner, Reston, Herndon, Fairfax, or somewhere along the Silver Line. IAD is closer than DCA from these areas.
  • You’re combining a DC trip with travel to Loudoun wineries or Northern Virginia tech corridor.

Skip IAD if:

  • You’re staying downtown and have a tight schedule. The transfer is at least 45 minutes, often 60+ during rush hour.
  • You’re flying domestic short-haul where DCA would do.

Baltimore-Washington (BWI): the value option

BWI is in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, about an hour north of DC. It is the dominant Southwest Airlines airport in the region and often has the cheapest fares.

Choose BWI if:

  • You’re flying Southwest. Their schedule and frequency at BWI is in a different league from DCA or IAD.
  • You’re staying in Maryland (Bethesda, Rockville, Annapolis, or Baltimore).
  • You found a fare significantly cheaper than DCA/IAD and have an extra hour to spare.
  • You’re connecting to Amtrak (BWI has its own Amtrak station with frequent DC service).

Skip BWI if:

  • Your trip is downtown DC or Virginia. The drive is long, and the hidden cost of the extra time often eats the fare savings.

Hidden costs to factor in

Don’t compare airports by airfare alone. Build a full transfer cost into your decision:

  • Parking: DCA’s Hourly garages run $24/day; IAD long-term economy is $17/day; BWI Express is $12/day.
  • Tolls: IAD via the Dulles Toll Road and BWI via the BW Parkway both run highway tolls, so factor those into the longer routes.
  • Time = money: A “cheap” BWI flight that costs you 90 extra minutes round-trip on a business trip is rarely actually cheap.

Which airport do our clients use most?

  • DCA handles the bulk of our airport pickups. Most clients are coming for downtown business, weddings at downtown hotels, or short-haul domestic.
  • IAD is next: international arrivals and clients staying in Tysons / Northern Virginia.
  • BWI rounds it out: Southwest flyers and Maryland-based clients.

Booking tips

If you’re flying into DC and need ground transportation:

  1. Lock in the limo before you book the flight if you can. Wedding parties, holidays, and Cherry Blossom season fill quickly.
  2. Send us your flight number, not just the time. We track flights live and adjust pickup automatically. No calls, no scrambling at baggage claim.
  3. Decide if you want a meet-and-greet. For international arrivals at IAD, a chauffeur waiting inside with a sign saves real time after a long flight.

We serve all three airports 24/7. One thing to know about pricing: we do not sell one-way transfer-only trips. Airport pickup comes as part of a private tour or hourly chauffeur booking, which starts at 3 hours ($380 in the Town Car, $420 in the SUV). The full booking is quoted before you confirm. No surge pricing.
