Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) is the third DC-metro airport. It’s 35 miles from downtown DC. Sometimes the smarter choice. Most often it’s Maryland residents flying Southwest, or DC visitors who saved $80 on a Friday-night ticket. Our BWI airport car service runs that 45-minute drive every day. One thing to know up front: we do not sell one-way transfer-only trips. Your BWI pickup is part of a private tour or hourly chauffeur booking, which starts at 3 hours ($380 in the Town Car, $420 in the SUV). Call us at (202) 609-9811 or book online. We answer 24/7.

When BWI is the right airport for your DC trip

BWI is the answer to a specific question: when does the longer ground ride make sense? Three situations come up consistently.

First, the fare gap. Southwest dominates BWI with nonstop routes from practically every major U.S. city, and their prices at BWI routinely run $50 to $100 lower than equivalent DCA flights on the same day. If your DC plans already include a tour or an hourly chauffeur block, the BWI leg folds into that booking, and the fare savings stays yours.

Second, the Maryland connection. For anyone staying or living in Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, or Rockville, BWI is simply closer. The drive from BWI to Bethesda is about 30 minutes. From DCA, it’s 30 minutes through traffic that routinely backs up on the 14th Street Bridge.

Third, the departure experience. BWI’s domestic security checkpoint at peak times moves noticeably faster than DCA’s. The terminal is spread out horizontally rather than in a tight multi-story stack, so the walk from check-in to gate is direct. That matters when you’re running a tight connection to your flight.

BWI terminal and pickup detail

BWI has one terminal building with five concourses (A through E). Concourse E handles international arrivals. Domestic arrivals come through Concourses A, B, C, and D.

For arrivals, two options:

Curbside pickup (default): The chauffeur meets you at the lower level arrivals curb, outside the baggage claim exit for your concourse. Tell us your concourse when you book (Southwest typically uses Concourse B or C; check your boarding pass). The driver will have the exact door.

Baggage claim meet-and-greet: For international arrivals at Concourse E, or for first-time visitors and unaccompanied minors, the chauffeur waits inside at baggage claim level with a name sign. Request this at booking. No extra charge.

The BWI leg is the first or last stretch of your tour or hourly booking in an executive sedan or executive SUV; we quote the full booking before you confirm. Drive times shown are off-peak on the BW Parkway. Weekday rush hour (3:30pm to 7pm heading south) adds 20 to 30 minutes to DC-bound routes.

How long is the drive from BWI to downtown DC?

About 45 minutes when traffic cooperates, 60 to 75 minutes during weekday rush. The BW Parkway (Route 295) is the standard route. It’s a scenic four-lane parkway that runs along the Anacostia River before entering Northeast DC, and it moves well outside of peak hours.

When the BW backs up, the alternates are I-95 south to Route 1, or cutting through Greenbelt and Silver Spring on Route 193. The chauffeur watches route conditions 30 minutes before every pickup. If the Parkway is stacked, they’re already on an alternate before they leave BWI.

How early should I be picked up for a BWI departure?

For domestic departures, plan on 2 hours before your boarding time. From downtown DC, a 9am boarding time means a 5:15am chauffeur pickup. From Bethesda or Silver Spring, that shifts to 6am because the drive is shorter.

For international departures from Concourse E, add 30 minutes. BWI’s international check-in area can run long when multiple long-haul flights depart within the same hour.

Southwest passengers: the airline doesn’t assign seats, and boarding position matters. Check in exactly 24 hours before your departure from wherever you are. Your chauffeur can hold your phone if you want to check in and board at the same moment you’re in the car.

Do you track my BWI flight?

Yes. Once you provide your flight number at booking, our dispatch system monitors live FAA status from departure through landing. If your BWI arrival shifts by 20 minutes in either direction, the chauffeur’s schedule adjusts automatically.

BWI serves as a connection hub for some international routes, which means delays can cascade from an earlier leg. We track the inbound aircraft’s tail number, not just the scheduled arrival time. If the plane coming from Denver is running 40 minutes late, we know before you board in Denver.

What’s included with a BWI pickup

Every BWI run includes:

  • 30 minutes free wait time for domestic flights from actual wheels-down
  • 60 minutes free wait time for international arrivals
  • Flight tracking with automatic pickup adjustment
  • Luggage assistance from baggage claim to vehicle
  • Complimentary bottled water
  • One quoted price for the full booking (no meter, no surge)

Fleet options for BWI pickups

Most BWI runs use the executive sedan or executive SUV. The sedan handles 3 passengers with standard luggage. The SUV is better if anyone has checked oversized bags.

For groups, the Mercedes Sprinter van handles up to 13 passengers and is popular for family reunions and corporate team pickups at BWI. Bethesda-based companies flying a team back from a conference often use an hourly Sprinter booking that covers the BWI leg plus the ride to the office.

Common questions about BWI service

Can I book just a BWI-to-DC transfer? No. We do not sell one-way transfer-only trips. BWI pickup is included in any private tour or hourly chauffeur booking, which starts at 3 hours ($380 in the Town Car, $420 in the SUV). The 45-minute ride to DC fits naturally inside that block.

Is BWI closer to Maryland suburbs than DCA? Yes. For Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and Rockville, BWI saves 10 to 20 minutes of drive time compared to DCA, and avoids the I-395/14th Street Bridge backup entirely.

Do you offer meet-and-greet at BWI international arrivals? Yes. For international flights through Concourse E, the chauffeur waits at baggage claim level with a name sign. International arrivals get 60 minutes of free wait time from wheels-down. Just request meet-and-greet at booking.

Can I book a same-day BWI pickup? Yes, if capacity allows. Call (202) 609-9811 and we confirm availability within minutes. Same-day bookings are generally available; for guaranteed service, book 24 hours ahead.

What’s the difference between BWI, DCA, and IAD? BWI is farthest from downtown DC (35 miles northeast, 45-minute drive). DCA is the closest (3 miles, 15-minute drive). IAD is 26 miles west (35 to 55 minutes). BWI is best for Maryland-bound travelers and Southwest flyers. See the full comparison on the airport transfers hub.

Pricing and how to book
