Virginia Wine Country Tours from DC

Virginia · Maryland · Loudoun County · Fauquier County

A Virginia wine tour from DC is the easiest way to spend a Saturday in Loudoun County wine country, Fauquier County, or Maryland's Frederick County wineries without anyone having to be the designated driver. There are 250+ vineyards within an hour of DC. We've been running wine tours up Route 7 and into the Blue Ridge foothills since the early 2000s. Most weekends our calendar is some mix of the Virginia wine country tour, the Maryland wine tour, or the open-format wine tasting tour.

How a Loudoun County wine tour works

A standard Northern Virginia wine tour visits 3 to 4 wineries in 6 to 8 hours. Most groups start mid-morning, hit two wineries before lunch, break for lunch at a winery with food (Stone Tower, Breaux, or 868 Estate are the usual picks), then two more wineries in the afternoon. The chauffeur waits at each stop. You don't drive. You don't navigate. You don't argue about who's had how many tastings. The vehicle is yours alone, never shared with another group.

Which Virginia wineries we visit

Loudoun County has the densest cluster: Stone Tower, Bluemont, Breaux, Greenhill, 868 Estate, Sunset Hills, Tarara. Fauquier County options include Barrel Oak (dog-friendly with mountain views), RdV Vineyards, and Three Fox. We can also do Frederick County in Maryland (Linganore, Black Ankle, Old Westminster) for groups that want a different scene. If you have favorites, just tell us when you book and we'll route accordingly.

What's included on a wine country tour

The chauffeured vehicle for the booked window. Tasting fees at the wineries are paid by you directly (typically $15-25 per tasting per person). Food at the winery is also direct. Wine tours run 6 to 8 hours, and 6 hours is the minimum in any vehicle: Loudoun is roughly an hour each way from downtown DC, so the travel time alone makes a shorter wine day pointless. Who books wine tours with us

Anniversaries, milestone birthdays (40th, 50th), bridal-party day-out before the wedding, corporate team offsites, and visiting-family Saturday outings make up most of the bookings. Stretch limousines and Mercedes Sprinter vans are the most common vehicles. The Sprinter handles 13 (typical for two couples + four friends + a couple of in-laws). Stretch limos hold 10, popular for bachelorette and anniversary trips. Browse the fleet for vehicle options.

Loudoun County vs Fauquier County: which should you choose

Loudoun is the easier choice logistically. It sits along Route 7 and Route 50 west of Leesburg, and the wineries cluster tightly enough that you can visit 3 or 4 without much driving between them. The scene is polished, many tasting rooms have food menus, and most are open daily. Fauquier County, centered around Warrenton and The Plains, is quieter. Barrel Oak has mountain views and a dog-friendly patio; RdV makes Bordeaux-style reds and is appointment-only. For groups that want a more refined, less crowded experience, Fauquier is the call. For groups that want variety and easy logistics, Loudoun wins.

Maryland wine country around Frederick County (Linganore, Black Ankle, Old Westminster) is a different day altogether: rolling hills, smaller production wineries, and a noticeably different vibe from Northern Virginia. Some groups specifically request Maryland because they live in Bethesda or Silver Spring and the drive is shorter. See the Maryland wine tour for the details on that route.

Are tasting fees included

No. Tasting fees at the wineries are paid directly by your group, typically $15 to $25 per person per tasting. Food at winery restaurants is also direct. The package covers the chauffeured vehicle for the booked window. The reason the fees aren't bundled is that wineries set their own prices and the range varies enough that a flat inclusion would either overcharge some groups or leave others short.

Can we customize which wineries we visit

Yes, that's standard. If your group has favorites, tell us when you book. If you don't have preferences, we suggest a route based on what's open, the season, and whether you want a food stop built in. Some wineries require reservations for large groups; we handle those calls in advance. The Virginia wine country tour and the open-format wine tasting tour are the two most commonly customized packages.

Best Virginia winery tour for a bachelorette party

Most bachelorette groups pick a stretch limo (up to 10) or the Sprinter (up to 13) and spend 6 to 8 hours doing 3 or 4 Loudoun wineries. Stone Tower has the views. Greenhill has one of the larger tasting rooms. Tarara has a comfortable outdoor setup that works well for a group that wants to linger. The wine tasting tours package is the open-format option that lets the group direct the route on the day. For a bachelorette, that flexibility is usually the right call. Call (202) 609-9811 and tell us the group size; we'll put together a route.
