Tour Highlights

  • 3 Loudoun or Middleburg wineries in one day
  • Bluemont Vineyard: hilltop views over the Loudoun valley
  • Stone Tower Winery: modern tasting room with charcuterie
  • Greenhill Winery: historic Middleburg Bordeaux-style reds
  • Lunch stop built into the route
  • Pro chauffeur means no designated driver, everyone tastes

Loudoun County calls itself DC’s Wine Country, and the name holds up: more than 40 wineries sit within an hour’s drive west of the city. This Virginia wine tour from DC is a 6-hour private chauffeured day trip that takes your group to three wineries in the Loudoun and Middleburg corridor, with a lunch stop in the middle. A career chauffeur drives the whole loop, so nobody plays designated driver and everybody tastes. It is a custom, self-paced private tour: the three wineries below are a starting point, so swap one in, drop one, or set the pace around the tastings you want. You can also build your own DC wine tour from scratch.

The drive out runs about 45 to 55 minutes from most DC addresses, west on Route 7 or the Dulles Greenway. The landscape changes the moment you cross into Loudoun: rolling hills, horse farms, low stone walls along the road. Most of the region’s best wineries cluster between Purcellville and Middleburg, which keeps the hops between stops short.

What the day looks like

A typical run leaves DC mid-morning and pulls back into the city by late afternoon. Here is how the 6 hours usually break down:

  • Roughly 90 minutes of total driving: 45 to 55 minutes each way, plus 10 to 20 minutes between wineries
  • Three tastings of 45 to 60 minutes each, with the vehicle waiting in the lot while you are inside
  • A lunch stop, either at a winery with a kitchen or in Leesburg between vineyards
  • Time to buy a bottle or two; we store your purchases in the climate-controlled vehicle between stops

If your group would rather trade lunch for a fourth winery, we can do four shorter stops instead. Most groups find three plus lunch is the pace that does not feel rushed.

Which wineries we visit

The exact three depend on your preferences, the season, and what’s open on your date. We’ll ask a few questions when you call: reds or whites, estate setting or casual outdoor deck, food-forward or wine-focused. We build the route from these stops along the Loudoun County wine trail:

  • Bluemont Vineyard: perched on a hilltop above the Loudoun Valley with views that stretch to the Blue Ridge, known for award-winning whites and Vidal Blanc
  • Stone Tower Winery: a modern tasting room near Leesburg with farm-to-table charcuterie boards and a strong lineup of Viognier and Bordeaux blends
  • Greenhill Winery: a historic estate in Middleburg with Bordeaux-style reds (Cabernet Franc in particular) and a formal tasting room atmosphere
  • Barrel Oak Winery: family-friendly and dog-friendly, open seating on a large deck, one of the most relaxed environments on the trail
  • Boxwood Estate Winery: Middleburg, French varietal focus, small production, reservations often required
  • Chrysalis Vineyards: one of the few wineries that specializes in Norton, the grape the Wine Spectator once called “the real American grape”
  • 868 Estate Vineyards: small-batch with strong food pairing options, usually less crowded than the major trail stops
  • The Winery at Bull Run: only about 25 miles from DC, on a Civil War battlefield site in Centreville, a good option when travel time matters

Tell us what you like and we’ll build the route. Our chauffeurs know which wineries have reservations requirements, which ones run seasonal events on your date, and which ones are worth the extra few miles.

What’s included

  • 6 hours of private chauffeur service
  • Door-to-door pickup from any DC, Maryland, or Virginia hotel or address
  • Choice of vehicle: Town Car sedan, Executive SUV, Stretch Limo, Sprinter Van, Mini Bus, or Coach Bus
  • Complimentary bottled water
  • Bottle storage between stops (bring a cooler bag or we can keep purchases in the vehicle)

Tasting fees are paid directly at each winery and are not included in the vehicle price. Fees typically run $15 to $30 per person per winery, and many wineries refund the fee if you purchase a bottle.

What’s the difference between Loudoun and Fauquier wineries?

Loudoun County is the more accessible corridor. It’s closer to DC, the trail is well-marked, and most major wineries there are open daily. Fauquier County, which runs south of Loudoun toward Warrenton and Culpeper, tends toward smaller estates with a quieter atmosphere. Middleburg sits on the border between the two counties and has several of the most well-regarded producers. For a first Virginia wine tour from DC, Loudoun is the practical choice. If you’ve done Loudoun before and want something less traveled, the Fauquier route is worth the extra miles.

Seasonal notes

April through June has the most consistent weather. September and October are harvest season, when many wineries run crush events, release new vintages, and the vineyard views are at their best. Several Loudoun wineries host live music on weekends from May through October. If your tour date falls on a holiday weekend, some stops may require reservations; we’ll flag that when you call.

Summer (July through August) works but can be hot on outdoor patios. Plan for some shade time or lean toward wineries with covered seating.

Common questions

How many wineries can we visit in 6 hours?

Three plus a lunch stop is the comfortable pace, and it’s what we recommend. Each tasting runs 45 to 60 minutes if you’re not rushing, and drives between Loudoun wineries are typically 10 to 20 minutes. Four is possible if lunch is light and you keep each stop tight. Five means 30 minutes a winery and no real lunch, which most groups find tiring. If you’d rather linger at two wineries than rush three, the same 6 hours covers that pace too.

How long is this Virginia wine tour from DC?

This full-day tour runs 6 hours door to door: about 90 minutes of total driving, three tastings, and a lunch stop. Six hours is also the minimum for any wine tour, because the travel time west of the city makes a shorter day pointless. It’s the length that fits three Loudoun wineries plus lunch without watching the clock.

Are tasting fees included?

No. Wineries set their own fees, typically $15 to $30 per person per winery. Many refund the fee on a bottle purchase. Your chauffeur can advise which stops waive fees with reservations.

Can you arrange lunch at a winery?

Yes. Stone Tower, Greenhill, and a few others have on-site restaurants or good food pairing menus. Tell us at booking and we’ll build the stop into the route with enough time.

Best Virginia winery tour for a bachelorette party?

For groups, the Mercedes Sprinter is the workhorse: it carries up to 13, has open seating, and gives everyone room to spread out between stops. Larger parties move up to the Executive Mini Bus (22 to 32). We can pack a cooler with water and sparkling beverages for the rides between wineries. Barrel Oak is a group favorite for its open outdoor deck and relaxed feel. Your chauffeur knows which wineries handle larger groups best on a given weekend.

Can we customize which wineries we visit?

Yes. If you have a specific winery in mind that’s not on the list above, tell us. As long as it’s on a reasonable route within Loudoun or Fauquier, we can include it.

How much does a private Virginia wine country tour cost?

Starting at $660 for 6 hours for two guests in the Town Car sedan (up to 3 guests), $720 in the Executive SUV (up to 6 guests), and $810 in the Stretch Limousine (up to 10 guests). Mercedes Sprinter at $840 (up to 13 guests). Executive Mini Bus at $1,080 (22 to 32 guests). Luxury Coach Bus at $1,334 (up to 55 guests).
